Description

My entry for ~comic-chic's FanAartPalooza! contest for her AMAZING graphic novel, The Dreamer. I absolutely love this stunning comic, so if you haven't checked it out, you have no excuse not to!

Flipping through Volume 2, one of my favorite parts is when Bea is trying on dresses and comes out and asks Alan, "Well, how do I look?" He replies, "Like a memory..." The little scene is so tender and beautiful, and I love the colors in it. So inspired by the sort of color palette from those pages, I painted a portrait of Bea. I wanted it to feel kind of reminiscent and old, like an old photograph or something.

This was my first time ever doing a large-scale picture in Sai, and I'm really pleased with the results! =D It was a lot of fun! A HUGE MEGA-AWESOME SHOUT-OUT goes to *gutter-child for helping me with the anatomy which for some reason was really giving me trouble!

Textures are from cgtextures.com.

Anyway, enjoy! And check out The Dreamer! =D

I love the hair and the textures!
Though I think my favorite part is the sleeves—I love how you drew them with straight lines instead of big poufs.

I'm trying to think of a critique, to be helpful, but it's pretty difficult! The nose looks a bit long, but I still like it. Bea has a small nose, and human noses are very strange. Maybe it would look less long (since it is in the correct placing on the face) if you narrowed the part between the eyebrows? Eyes and eyebrows look good, and nose and mouth look perfect together, but the eyes & eyebrows (since the eyes are bigger) combined with the nose & mouth look a bit off, and I think the start of the nose at the eyebrows is the source of the disjointedness.

Of course, I say all this because you asked for critique. But I think it looks great! That is my favorite Bea dress :)
